In California, changes are made to codes, rules, and forms every January and every July.  Nine times out of ten, those changes affect the accuracy of Litigation By The Numbers®.

Every legal professional needs to keep up on current rules!

  • Do not purchase any procedural guide without first checking when it was last updated and how often it will be updated.
  • Make sure it's updated twice yearly, and that changes go out before they go into effect!
  • Make sure you get replacement pages, not pocket parts.
  • Make sure the replacement pages come with an explanation of the changes.

Our Update Service does all that and more.  See a sample Update Service Cover Memo.

For less than $7.00 per month (or less than $5.50 if you buy the Combo Pak!), our Update Service provides you with a cost-effective, hassle-free way to ensure that your copy has the latest rules, codes, and forms - so it remains as up-to-date as it was on the date of your initial purchase. Customers who initially purchased their books as far back as 2003, and have continuously subscribed to the Update Service, rely on the same material being sold today!

  • If you already have a copy of Litigation By The Numbers®, you may subscribe online by adding your one or two year subscription to your PayPal Shopping Cart. Alternatively, you may subscribe by mail or fax by clicking here for the Update Service Subscription Order Form and sending it in with your check or credit card information.
  • If you have not purchased a book yet, be sure to buy the Combo Pak (book and the Update Service), which will save you $15.00+ and make you eligible for the Abacuslaw Bonus Offer.
  • If you have no idea what the Update Service is, please read on!

What We Update

The current July 2008 Update (41 pages) made fantastic improvements and additions, including a brand new 11-page section on expert witness exchanges with three new text forms. The January 2008 Update (42 pages) covered new rules re fax service, new rules re telephonic appearances, new format for separate statements for motions for summary judgment and summary adjudication, and more.  The January 2007 Update (which revised one-half of the book!) was required because the California Rules of Court were completely reorganized, 22 Judicial Council forms were revised, and changes were made to the procedure for objecting to evidence in motions for summary judgment.

The Update Bonuses

To the author, every update presents an opportunity to improve the book and incorporate the suggestions of readers, students, and instructors. The books of Update Service subscribers keep getting better and better.

  • The July 2008 Update consisted solely of improvements.
  • The January 2008 Update added a 2-page table of discovery deadlines.
  • The July 2007 Update added a lot more detail on calendaring and motions to compel further responses to discovery, added the new rules on "collections cases," and expanded the scope of the book to include limited civil cases.
  • The 2005 Updates added helpful tables in the Motions chapter

Update Service subscribers are entitled to the Abacuslaw Bonus Offer.

How We Update

During the update process, we:

  • replace old Judicial Council forms with new ones
  • revise the instructions for preparing forms when necessary
  • add new forms and instructions
  • change and/or supplement rule and code references (e.g., filing and service deadlines!)

    When We Update

We get our Updates out to subscribers before they actually go into effect. So, Updates effective January 1st are mailed out, at the very latest, early in the last week of December; those effective July 1st are mailed out, at the very latest, early in the last week of June.
